Pin-ups!
Saw this on one of my favourite blogs, Lost in E Minor (always a source of inspiration!). Here we see the original shots used by Gil Elvgren, legendary American painter who used them as references to create these iconic 50's pin-up images. I've had to explain numerous times to art directors that most artists need to use photography in this way, even amazing people like Gil Elvgren. What is so astonishing is how close the shots are to his artwork, what details he added (like the shoes and the bikinis and the pelican) and how little beautifying he had to do; the girls all have enviable 50's figures and great expressions.
